U.S. automobiles and light trucks are responsible for nearly half of all greenhouse gases emitted by automobiles globally, according to a new study by Environmental Defense. 314 million metric tons of carbon dioxide is emitted annually by personal vehicles in the United States alone. That much carbon could fill a coal train 55,000 miles long which would be long enough to circle the earth twice.

While Americans own only 30 percent of the 700 million vehicles that are in use worldwide, cars in the U.S. account for a disproportionate amount of greenhouse gas emissions.

• U.S. cars and light trucks were driven 2.6 trillion miles annually, the equivalent of 10 million 
trips from the earth to the moon.
• U.S. automobiles had an average fuel economy of 19.6 miles per gallon, for an average annual consumption of just over 600 gallons of gasoline.
• Gasoline in the United States contains 5.3 pounds of carbon per gallon. All of that carbon ends up in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide in automobile exhaust when the fuel is burned. So the average car in the U.S. puts more than 1.5 tons of carbon into the air every year. That’s one car, in one year.

Volatile Organic Compounds, also known as hydrocarbons, cause an ozone layer to form on the ground. This can cause eye and breathing problems in humans and is also thought to be carcinogenic, according to Environmental Protection Agency research.  Carbon monoxide (CO) is another serious byproduct of modern combustion engine exhaust. The EPA advises that heart disease sufferers should be particularly wary of this gas, as it interferes with proper levels of oxygen flowing through your bloodstream.  Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas, which is thought by the EPA to contribute to our global warming problem as of August 2009.

Also according to the EPA, nitrous oxides (NOx) not only contribute to our ozone and smog problems, but they also help to precipitate acid rain.  To address these environmental concerns, the current administration is committed to increasing the use of renewable fuels.
